Importing your QIF file into Quicken is both easy and painless if you follow these steps. First, you may want to compare your MYM categories names to those in Quicken. You can start Quicken and select the Categories & Transfers item from the View menu. Quicken will display the list of Categories and Transfers. You can select the Print Categories & Transfers item from the File menu to print this list. Next, create all your accounts (e.g., checking, Visa, Cash, etc.). in Quicken using the same name you used in MYM. By creating these accounts before you import your data, Quicken will automatically show the transfers between accounts.
Also, Quicken only allows you to have 16 characters in a category name. If you have any names over 16 characters, you can global change them to a shorter name.
Importing Data to Quicken
Once you have created all the accounts you wish to import into Quicken, you are ready to import your data. We recommend that you start with your checking account. First, select the account you want to import your data into from the Accounts window. Once the account’s register is displayed, select the Import item from the File menu. Now, select your QIF file from in the list. Quicken will then import your data and display the correct balance.
Repeat these steps for each account you wish to import including your stock portfolio. When you have finished, you may need to delete any duplicate transactions that were created when you imported a cash or credit card account.
